SSB / Defence Selection Preparation
Structured preparation for the multi-day Services Selection Board (SSB) process, covering OIR, PPDT, psychological tests, group tasks and the personal interview.
What is SSB / Defence?
The Services Selection Board (SSB) interview is a multi-day selection process used for entry into the Indian Armed Forces, following a candidate's success in the relevant written exam (such as NDA, CDS or AFCAT). It assesses Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) across two stages — Screening (Day 1) and Testing (Days 2–5) — rather than testing subject knowledge alone.
ReadyUp is building structured preparation for the SSB process. Full coverage of every stage is being developed progressively — check back for updates on what's currently supported.

Sections
OIR (Officer Intelligence Rating)
Verbal and non-verbal reasoning tests used in Screening to shortlist candidates for Stage 2.
PPDT (Picture Perception & Discussion Test)
Candidates perceive a picture, write a story, and then discuss it in a group — assessing perception and group communication.
Psychological assessment
TAT, WAT, SRT and Self-Description tests used to assess personality traits and Officer Like Qualities.
Group tasks
GTO tasks including group discussions, group planning exercises, progressive/half group tasks, and command tasks.
Personal interview
A one-on-one interview assessing background, motivation and suitability for a career in the armed forces.
Preparation Strategy
SSB preparation is as much about self-awareness and consistent OLQ development as it is about test technique. Practice OIR-style reasoning questions for speed, work on structured story-writing and quick decision-making for PPDT and the psychological tests, and build genuine familiarity with current affairs and your own background for the interview. Group task performance improves mainly through realistic practice and honest peer feedback.
Common Preparation Mistakes
- Over-rehearsing "ideal" answers instead of demonstrating genuine, consistent personality traits
- Neglecting OIR speed practice and losing Screening on Day 1
- Not practising timed story-writing for TAT/PPDT under realistic time pressure
- Dominating or staying silent in group tasks instead of showing balanced leadership
