What is GRE?
The GRE (Graduate Record Examination), administered by ETS, is one of the most widely required standardized tests for graduate school admissions worldwide, especially in the United States. It tests Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing, and is section-adaptive — your performance on the first Verbal and Quant sections affects the difficulty of the next.
Exam Pattern
The GRE General Test is computer-delivered and section-level adaptive, with two Verbal Reasoning sections, two Quantitative Reasoning sections, and an Analytical Writing section. Verbal and Quant are each scored on a 130–170 scale, and Analytical Writing on a 0–6 scale.
Sections
Verbal Reasoning
Reading comprehension, text completion and sentence equivalence questions testing vocabulary and reasoning.
Quantitative Reasoning
Arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis, including quantitative comparison questions.
Analytical Writing
An "Analyze an Issue" essay task assessing clarity of argument and writing.
Preparation Strategy
Because the GRE is section-adaptive, performing well on the first Verbal and Quant sections matters disproportionately — build strong fundamentals before attempting adaptive full-length mocks. GRE Verbal leans heavily on vocabulary in context, so consistent, spaced vocabulary practice pays off more than last-minute cramming.
Common Preparation Mistakes
- Under-practising Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence, which need precise vocabulary, not just general reading skill
- Neglecting Quant Comparison questions, which have their own answer-choice logic distinct from standard MCQs
- Treating Analytical Writing as an afterthought despite it being a scored section
- Not simulating the adaptive difficulty jump between Section 1 and Section 2 during practice
