English Proficiency

IELTS Preparation

Structured practice for IELTS Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

What is IELTS?

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is one of the most widely accepted English proficiency tests worldwide, used for university admissions, work permits and immigration. It is offered in Academic and General Training formats, with the Academic version typically required for university study.

Exam Pattern

IELTS tests four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — each scored on a 9-band scale, with an overall band score averaged across all four. The Speaking test is a face-to-face (or video) interview, while Listening, Reading and Writing can be taken on paper or computer depending on the test center.

Sections

Listening

Four recorded sections of increasing difficulty, testing comprehension of conversations and monologues.

Reading

Three long passages (Academic) with a range of question types testing comprehension and inference.

Writing

Two tasks — describing visual data (Academic Task 1) or a letter (General Task 1), and an essay (Task 2).

Speaking

A three-part face-to-face interview covering familiar topics, a cue-card monologue, and a discussion.

Preparation Strategy

Build core English skills first, then shift to timed, format-specific practice for each section — IELTS rewards familiarity with its exact question types (like matching headings in Reading, or the two-part Writing structure) as much as raw English ability. Recording and reviewing your own Speaking answers is one of the highest-value preparation habits.

Common Preparation Mistakes

  • Not managing time across Reading's three passages, running out of time on the last one
  • Writing Task 2 essays without a clear structure or position
  • Under-practising Speaking Part 2's one-minute cue-card format
  • Ignoring word-count and time limits during Writing practice
