What is ACT?

The ACT is a standardized test used as an alternative to the SAT for undergraduate admissions in the United States, accepted at essentially all four-year colleges that require standardized testing. Unlike the SAT, the ACT includes a dedicated Science section and, in recent format updates, has moved toward more flexible and in some cases shorter test options — confirm the current structure with the official ACT organization.

Exam Pattern

The ACT traditionally covers English, Math, Reading and Science, each scored 1–36, combined into a composite score. An optional Writing test is also available depending on requirements. Check act.org for the current exact section list, timing and any recent format changes.

Sections

English

Grammar, punctuation, sentence structure and rhetorical skills across passages.

Math

Algebra, geometry, trigonometry and data-based problem solving.

Reading

Passage-based comprehension across multiple subject areas.

Science

Interpreting data, experiments and conflicting viewpoints — testing scientific reasoning more than recalled science content.

Preparation Strategy

The ACT rewards speed under a tighter per-question time budget than the SAT, particularly in Reading and Science — timed, full-section practice is essential. Since the Science section tests data interpretation rather than memorized facts, practice reading graphs and experimental setups quickly rather than reviewing science content itself.

Common Preparation Mistakes

  • Treating ACT Science as a content-knowledge test instead of a data-interpretation-speed test
  • Not practising under the ACT's tighter per-section time limits compared to the SAT
  • Skipping full-length timed mocks and only doing untimed section practice
