What is Duolingo English Test?
The Duolingo English Test (DET) is a fully online, at-home, AI-proctored English proficiency test that has gained wide acceptance among universities, particularly in the US, Canada, UK and Australia, as a faster and more affordable alternative to traditional tests. It is computer-adaptive and typically completed in about an hour, with results often available within a couple of days.
Exam Pattern
The DET combines adaptive item types — including fill-in-the-blank, read-and-select, listen-and-type, and short spoken and written responses — into a single continuous test session at home, followed by an unscored video interview and writing sample section used for institutional review. Scores are reported on a 10–160 scale.

Preparation Strategy
Because the DET is adaptive and time-boxed per item, practice working accurately under a strict per-question timer rather than a fixed overall clock. Since the test is taken at home, also rehearse the technical setup (webcam, microphone, quiet room) in advance to avoid losing time on proctoring issues.
